Abhyanga – Self-care with Ayurveda

By: Keya B.

Abhyanga – Ayurvedic oil massage highly emphasizes self-care, therapeutic healing, and balancing dosha. According to Charak Samhita (Sanskrit text on Ayurveda), Abhyanga is essential to overcome exhaustion, detoxify, and promote body strength. Abhyanga – Ayurvedic oil massage is performed using herbal oils based upon individual dosha and Prakriti (Body Constitution) or as recommended by the Vaidya – Ayurvedic health expert. Abhyanga recommends warm oil massage in the morning before a shower or at night for rejuvenating cellular therapy.

Using Dosha-specific oil for abhyanga is highly beneficial:

  • Ashvagandha, Shatavari, and Castor oil balances Vata
  • Neem, Coconut, Licorice, and Sunflower oil balances Pitta
  • Almond, Mustard, and Sesame oil balances Kapha
  • Brahmi, Bhringaraj, Arjuna and Tulsi oil balances tri-dosha

Abhyanga should be performed gently (Sneha Sukshma) by targeting the seven layers of the body tissue (Dhatus) with love and patience. It should be performed from head to feet with warm oil for five-fifteen minutes. Firm pressure should be applied to extremities. Soft pressure should be applied to the neck, face, eyes, forehead. Joints and Abdomen should be massaged anti-clockwise in a circular motion
