Asthavidha Pariksha (Eight Fold Process)

Ayurvedic consultation consists of various aspects like Asthavidha Pariksha (Eight-Fold Exam), Prakriti (Body constitution), Vikriti (Body Imbalances), and Kaal (Recurring imbalances based on time and weather). In Ayurvedic terms, Asthavidha means ‘Astha- Eight,’ ‘Vidha- Process,’ ‘Pariksha – Exam.’ Ashtavidha Pariksha consists of examination processes like:

Pulse

  • Ayurvedic expert determines the strength of doshas like vatta, pitta, and kapha through pulse rate.
  • Pulse qualities like slow, heavy, stable, light, or feeble help determine the strength of the dosha.
  • Light or cold pulse represents vatta, hot or sharp pulse represents pitta, and a slow, stable pulse represents kapha.

Urine

  • The color of the urine determines the strength of the dosha present in the body.
  • The whitish color of urine represents the presence of vatta.
  • Frothy urine represents the presence of pitta. Dark yellow or reddish color represents the presence of kapha.

Stool

  • Daily bowel movement determines the overall health of the individual, along with the presence of dosha.
  • Constipation and strain represent the presence of vatta.
  • Loose stool and diarrheal conditions represent the presence of pitta.
  • Little heavy and slushy stool represents the presence of kapha.

Eyes

  • The color of the eyes helps determine the presence of a particular dosha in the body.
  • Dry eyes represent the presence of vatta.
  • The yellow or reddish eyes represent the presence of pitta.
  • Watery eyes represent the presence of kapha.

Tongue

  • An ayurvedic expert can examine the tongue and determine the presence of specific dosha and health conditions of the body based on the color, shape, and coating.
  • A pointed tip tongue with crackings represents the presence of vatta. The red-colored tongue represents the presence of pitta.
  • A large round-tipped tongue with some coatings represents the presence of kapha.
  • Tongue with coatings represents the weak digestive system, and with the scalloped edges represents malnutrition.

Skin

  • The skin disorders like dry or peeling skin, eczema, acne, psoraisis, etc represents the imbalance in doshas.
  • Most of the skin disorders are caused due to imbalance in Pitta. Pitta being associated with the fire is responsible for absorpton and digestion of the food.
  • Indigestion leads to release of the toxins in the blood causing inflammation and infections on the skin.
  • Vatta and Kapha causes only minor problems like dry or greasy skin.

Voice

  • The overall physique of the individual indicates an individual’s stamina, strength, and lifestyle.
  • Vatta represents weaker body structure, dry skin, and intolerance towards cold things.
  • Pitta represents a strong appetite and bold personality.
  • Kapha represents oily skin, well-built body structure.

Appearance

  • The overall physique of the individual indicates an individual’s stamina, strength, and lifestyle.
  • Vatta represents weaker body structure, dry skin, and intolerance towards cold things.
